The school's motto was 'Duty First' and the school colours were
blue and white.
Mr. Barr was on the committee to build Sunbury Secondary College
Mr Barr was on the committee for Sunbury Primary School's 100th
Anniversary in 1969.
Mr. Barr's nickname was Teddy Bear, and his friend who had red hair
was called Ginger.
Mr. Barr also knew Dr Jim Cairns, the Treasurer of Australia because
he came to the same school and he would ride down on his pony to the
school and give the kids a ride on it. The kids would think it was a
real treat to have a ride on the pony.
When the Catholic 8th grade children were sitting for their Merit
certificate they would come to Sunbury Primary School for their
examination. Mr Barr failed arithmetic (maths).
They always wanted electricity for the school but when they applied
for it the Education Department didn't think it was necessary. So the
committee decided to pay for it themselves. They got a contractor to
put in electricity for them. When the school inspector came the next
week to the school council meeting (held at night time) he didn't
even notice the electricity had been put in.
When Mr Barr went to school they used to march in to school with
someone playing the kettle drum. They would bang it with sticks and
have it hanging around their neck. One girl didn't like playing the
drum so she put the sticks that you bang the drum with through the
skin then they had to get a new skin.
Children would keep their hats in the little room at the end of the
passage (now the reading room).
